Light, Crunchy, and Unfiltered: The Truth About Beef Lung Treats
Beef lung is a lean, high-protein organ meat most dogs love. Here's what's in it, how much to give, and when it isn't the right treat.
Yes, beef lung is a good treat for most healthy dogs. It's a lean organ meat that's high in protein and low in fat, and dried beef lung has a light, crunchy texture that's easy to break into small pieces. Like any treat, it should stay around 10% of your dog's daily calories. If your dog has a health condition, check with your vet first.
The Short Version
-
Lean and high in protein, with less fat than many other organ meats.
-
Light and airy, so it breaks easily for small dogs and training.
-
Strong smell and taste that most dogs, including picky ones, go for.
-
It crumbles. It's a treat, not a long-lasting chew.
-
Quality depends on where it's sourced and how it's dried.
What Is Beef Lung, Exactly?
It's the lung of a cow, and it's one of the less glamorous parts of the animal. It's spongy when raw and turns light and crisp when it's dried. Because it's mostly protein and holds very little fat, it dries into a treat that's surprisingly light for its size. A full bag looks like a lot more than it weighs.
Using it also means less of the animal goes to waste, which we like.

Why Do Dogs Like It So Much?
It smells strongly of meat, and dogs lead with their noses. Customers tell us this is the treat that wins over their pickiest dogs.
"Zoey is notoriously picky with new treats, but the moment she smelled these beef lung fillets, she sat instantly. They snap apart easily so I can reward her quickly during training without filling her up."
— Brian & Zoey
How Much Beef Lung Can My Dog Have?
Keep all treats, beef lung included, to about 10% of your dog's daily calories. The rest should come from their regular food. In practice, that's a few small pieces a day for most dogs, more for big dogs, less for small ones.
| Dog Size | Rough Daily Guide |
| Small (under 10 kg) |
1/2 to 1 fillet (approx. 2.5g – 5g / up to 18 kcal) |
| Medium (10–25 kg) |
1 to 2 fillets (approx. 5g – 10g / 19–38 kcal) |
| Large (over 25 kg) |
2 to 4 fillets (approx. 10g – 20g / 38–76 kcal) |
If you're using it for training, break each fillet into pea-sized bits and cut back a little on dinner that day.
When Is Beef Lung Not the Right Treat?
We make it, and we'll still tell you it isn't for every dog.
